Proper hair and scalp care is essential to healthy hair. Shampoo hair only when it is dirty. The frequency with which you shampoo your hair depends on the unique qualities of your hair and of your environment. As a basic guideline, people with normal to dry hair can wash once or twice a week, while those with oily hair can probably wash more frequently. Over shampooing your hair can deplete the hair and scalp of its natural oils, leaving hair dull and scalp dry. Under shampooing your hair can lead to oily build up on the scalp, which leads to clogged pores and stunted hair growth. Washing your hair regularly removes the normal buildup of dirt, dead skin cells, oils produced by skin glands, and any products you put in your hair.
All shampoos and conditioners are not created equal. Use shampoo/conditioner for your hair type. Shampoos and Conditioners are specially formulated by hair texture, density and chemical service (like color or relaxer). Using the wrong shampoo or conditioner may create hair problems you don’t have. For instance, using a shampoo for dry, thick hair on hair that is oily and thin may be too heavy and leave you with hair that is lifeless and weighted. If you are not sure about your hair type, or find that your hair is not achieving the styling you desire, ask a hair care professional to recommend the right products for you.
Trim every 6 to 8 weeks. Trim help to maintain your style and promote length. Hair grows at an average rate of ½ inch a month. Damaged hair doesn’t grow; it breaks. Trimming prevents the damage on the ends from spreading up the hair follicle, thus allowing you to maintain more length.
Protect your hair from the sun. Just like your skin, UV exposure from the sun can be damaging to your hair. Use finishing products that contain UV protection. This will help to maintain moisture, prevent color fading and sun damage.
Turn to a hair professional for all chemical needs (hair color, relaxers, perms). These chemical services alter the hair structure which when performed incorrectly can lead to serve damage, especially if continued over time. Also, the cosmetology industry is constantly evolving. New treatments and products are surfacing every year to replace harmful chemical services with new solutions. Through continuing education, a good stylist keeps up with these new developments and will be able to assist you with making the right decision to maintain healthy hair.

Spring is the beginning of what could be a problematic time of year for your hair, especially if you are unable to maintain the proper moisture balance. The rain and humidity can cause your hair to frizz, break, or “poof up” as the humidity sits moisture right on top of your hair strands. If you experience these problems, Cole Stevens has some solutions to maintain your healthy hair and maintain your budget.

The keratin smoothing treatment, by Coppola, is a remedy to your troubles such as frizz from humidity and breakage caused by dryness. It is a non-chemical process that will create smoother, softer hair by loosening your natural curl pattern. It is especially beneficial if you are transitioning your hair from a relaxer. The infusion of the keratin protein held in a mositurizied molecule into the cuticle of the hair to achieve your natural moisture balance. When you hair is properly hydrated, it takes on less moisture from the environment and thus is substantially less affected by humidity.

While the keratin treatment is costly ($350), it last up to 5 month. Many clients find that once they have had the treatment a second time, they can go up to 7 months before needing to be refreshed. Although each client is different, so consult with one of our stylist to determine if this treatment will help you manage your Spring Fever!!!!

Cole Stevens, partnered with The Cinderella Foundation, is sponsoring a bra drive for the women affected by the devastating earthquakes in Haiti. From March 15, 2010 through May 15, 2010, you can bring new, unworn bras to Cole Stevens at Greenbelt or Capitol Hill and give them to a Guest Services team member.

Do You Need Hydration?

We ask this question at least 20 times a day. In Summer 2008, we introduced an in-salon moisturizing treatment, which is designed to hydrate the hair and balance the natural pH levels using ionized steam heat. Since last summer, in addition to the Moisturizing treatment, Cole Stevens has introduced Fortifying and Strengthening treatments. Cole Stevens’s clients often use the generic catch phase “Hydration Treatment” to refer to all of these treatments.

Hydration: Moisturizing (Cost $25) – This treatment is designed for clients who experience mild to moderate dryness of hair or scalp. Dry, itching scalp or damaged hair due to things like relaxer, over-processing, or environment can result in stunted hair growth, hair thinning or breakage. Once hair is properly hydrated, then clients’ notice their nature curl pattern is soft and supple allowing for maximum versatility of styling- straight, curly/wavy or in its nature texture.

Hydration: Strengthening (Cost $50) – This hair treatment is customized to the specific hair needs of clients who are experiencing breakage or thinning. This treatment blends protein and vitamins with moisture to add strength and/or thickness to the hair. Excessive shedding may be an indication of weak hair in need of a strengthening treatment. If you are experiencing and these issues, then check with your stylist about starting these treatments.

Hydration: Fortifying (Cost $50) – If you have moderate to extreme dryness, breakage and/or thinning then the Fortifying Treatment was designed for you. Typically, a client with these issues has had prolonged damage or experienced both scalp and hair issues. This treatment combines Moisture and Strength products to treat hair and scalp. During this treatment, a deep scalp cleansing removes dead skin and build up from scalp allowing the scalp to breath and promote maximum hair growth, while moisturizing and increasing pH balance of hair. This treatment is also recommended for clients before and after wearing braids or weaves to prep and protect hair from extra weight and chemicals used on synthetic and human hair.
